PRINCESS
ANNE, Md.- The Monmouth University women's tennis team earned a 6-1 victory
over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in a nonconference match on
Saturday afternoon.
After
beating the Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore 5-1 in singles competition,
Monmouth clinched the nonconference win with a sweep of three doubles matches.
In
the singles competition, sophomore Jessica Slinger (Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth
Regional) defeated Paula Vilas (6-1, 6-1) in the No. 2 match of the day. Newcomer Dana Ferrari
(Saddle Brook, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) beat Latoya Coltrane in the third
flight (6-1, 6-0). Junior Katie Tierney (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor
Livingston) won the fourth match, and sophomore Britney Dupuis (Freehold, N.J./Colts
Neck) clinched a victory in the fifth spot, both beating their opponents 6-0,
6-0. Senior Diane Washer (Ogdensburg, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional) attained a
6-0, 6-0 victory in the sixth slotted singles match.
Tierney
combined with freshman Nicole Lippens (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional)
for the Blue and White's first doubles victory of the day in the form of an 8-2
triumph. The veteran Washer and newcomer Alyssa Teehan (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown
South) handily defeated Coltrane/Chapman
8-0, and the duo of Slinger and Ferrari completed the sweep with an 8-0 win.
The
Hawks return to action on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 as they take on Delaware
State at 3 p.m.
