MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Monmouth University women's basketball team fell at Marquette University, 56-41 on Sunday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center. The Hawks, who lead the BIG EAST's Golden Eagles for much of the first half, drop to 1-2 on the season, while Marquette improves to 4-0.
Monmouth was led by sophomore Alysha Womack (Springfield, Pa. /Cardinal O'Hara) who scored 10 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Classmate Adriana Allen (Ajax, Ont. /Pickering) chipped in nine points off the bench on 4-of-6 shooting, while senior Gena Broadus (Washington, D.C. /Archbishop Carroll [George Mason]) contributed seven points and a season-best 12 rebounds.
Angel Robinson paced the Golden Eagles with 12 points, while Tatiyiana McMorris added 11 points and five assists.
The Hawks held Marquette to 19 points below its season scoring average and just over 40% shooting. The Golden Eagles came into today's game averaging over 70 points per contest and shooting near 50%.
Broadus connected on a three-pointer, her first in a Monmouth uniform, along the left wing to give the Blue and White a 9-6 lead with 14:35 left in the first half.
Coming out of the timeout, sophomore Carly Thibault (East Lyme, Conn. /East Lyme) found an open Womack along the left wing, who knocked down a triple to push the Hawks' lead to six, its largest of the game. After five quick points from the Golden Eagles, Allen hit a jumper in the lane gave the Hawks a 14-13 advantage midway through the opening half.
Allen scored eight straight for the Hawks, her final hoop in the sequence giving the visitor's a 20-16 lead with 6:09 left before the half. Marquette ended the first half on an 8-1 scoring run to take a 24-21 lead into halftime.
Marquette, which shot 37% from the floor in the first half, shot 48.1% in the second half to pull away from Monmouth. The Golden Eagles' lead grew to as many as 18 points with 2:28 remaining in the game after a hoop from McMorris.
Monmouth shot 30.8% in the second half on 8-26 shooting and finished the game shooting 32.1% from the field.
Monmouth returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Longwood at 4:00 pm.
