West Long Branch, N.J.- Monmouth
University's women's tennis team earned its first win of the 2010 season with a
7-0 blanking of Rider University at home on Thursday afternoon.
The Hawks won two of three doubles matches to earn the one team point. The duo of freshman Brooke Verdiglione (Englishtown, N.J. /St. John Vianney ) and senior Reciel Arribe (Hillsborough, N.J. /Hillsborough) downed Rider's second doubles tandem 8-3 while
the Hawks also got a win out of sophomore Dana Ferrari (Saddle Brook, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) and junior Jessica Slinger (Tinton Falls, N.J. (Monmouth Regiona).
Ferrari and Slinger won an 8-2 decision over Broncs Danielle White and
Jaclyn Giameo in the third doubles flight.
MU swept the six singles matches with senior Nicole Lippens (West Long Branch,
N.J./Shore Regional) setting the tone at the No. 1 spot with a 6-2, 6-2 victory
over Marly Roche. Verdiglione downed
Tricia Ashmore (6-1, 6-3) and Ferrari dispatched Mallory Garbaravage 6-1, 6-1
in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, respectively.
Junior Britney Dupuis (Freehold, N.J./Colts Neck) edged out White in the
fourth singles match 7-6 (5), 6-1 while Hawks Katie Tierney (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) and Shelby Goldman (West Hempstead, N.Y./West Hempstead) rounded out the sweep for the Hawks with wins in
the fifth and sixth singles matches.
The Hawks, now 1-2 in matches this season, will look to build on that first win
when they travel to Rhode Island this weekend for matches against URI and
Bryant.
