STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Freshman midfielder Alexandra Baca's first career goal, just 3:27 into overtime, lifted the Monmouth University women's soccer team to a 1-0 Northeast Conference victory at Wagner on Sunday afternoon. With the victory, the Hawks improve to 9-6-2 overall and 4-3-2 in league play, while senior goalkeeper Lia Fierro set a new program-record for career shutouts in the win.

"Defensively, we have really buckled down and allowed few chances to this scrappy Wagner team," stated head coach Krissy Turner. "We had numerous opportunities to score but stayed resiliEnt, and finally put one away."

After a scoreless 90 minutes of action, in which the Hawks outshot Wagner 26-3, Monmouth finally broke through when Baca collected her first collegiate score in the 94th minute of play, as the midfielder's attempt beat Seahawks' goalkeeper Katie Marcy.

In addition to the Hawks' road victory, giving Monmouth 14 points in the NEC standings with one game remaining in its regular season, Fierro set a new standard in shutouts for the Hawks with 35 career clean sheets. Fierro, who made two saves in the match, surpassed Lori Houlihan, who had 34.5 shutouts from 1995-98.

"Congratulations to Lia and all of the players that helped her achieve a new shutout record at Monmouth," added Turner. "There have been many outstanding goalkeepers who have patrolled the nets for the Blue and White, and Lia is now at the top of the list."

Monmouth outshot Wagner 27-3 in the game, forcing Marcy to make 12 saves. Monmouth also held an 8-2 edge in corner kick opportunities.

Monmouth returns to action on Sunday, October 31, when the Hawks host Bryant University on The Great Lawn at 11:00 a.m., on Senior Day.
