LONG BRANCH, N.J.- Monmouth University's women's
tennis team earned its second win of the 2010 fall season with a impressive 7-0
blanking of conference foe Wagner on Monday afternoon.
The win improves Monmouth's record to 2-6
(1-1 NEC), while Wagner falls to 1-6 (1-2 NEC) on the season. The Hawks were without regulars Nicole Lippens
(West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) and Britney Dupuis (Freehold, N.J./Colts Neck)
due to injury.
Freshman Brook Verdiglione (Englishtown, N.J./St. John Vianney), playing
in the No. 1 spot for the first time all year, defeated Nikki Arnold in
straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. In second singles, Sophomore Dana Ferrari (Saddle Brook, N.J./Immaculate Heart
Academy) blanked Joanna Ciavarella 6-0, 6-0. Katie Tierney (Berkeley Heights,
N.J./Governor Livingston) shut out Sabrina Dileo 6-0, 6-0. At fourth singles,
Shelby Goldman (West Hempstead, N.Y./West Hempstead) defeated Catharine
Scavelli 6-1, 6-1. Junior Jessica Slinger (Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth
Regional) knocked off Diana Ciavarella 6-0, 6-1 at the fifth singles spot.
The
Blue and White earned the doubles points as the combo of Verdiglione and
Goldman defeated Arnold and Diana Ciavarella, 8-1. At second doubles, Senior
Reciel Arribe (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) and classmate Tierney beat Joanna
Ciavarella and Sabrina Dileo, 8-1.
Wagner defaulted at the No. 6 singles spot and the No. 3 doubles spot,
completing the sweep for the Hawks.
The Hawks wrap up the fall tomorrow when
they host Sacred Heart at 3:30 p.m.
