FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Monmouth University women's tennis team fell to Manhattan Wednesday afternoon at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, 5-2, in the season's first non-conference matchup. After winning the season's first doubles point, last Monday against Sacred Heart, but dropping all singles matches, the Hawks posted the year's first singles points against Manhattan - in fourth and sixth singles.
After falling in an early 0-3 hole, dropping first through third singles, freshman Dana Ferrari (Saddle Brook, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) got the Hawks on the board posting a 6-3, 6-1 victory over the Jaspers' Krasinski in fourth singles. The win marked the first career singles triumph for the newcomer.
Sophomore Britney Dupuis (Freehold, N.J./Colts Neck) followed Ferrari's lead and defeated Manhattan's Ton, 6-3, 6-1 in sixth singles for MU's second point of the match.
In doubles action, Monmouth was narrowly defeated in second and third doubles to lose the deciding doubles point. The duo of sophomore Jessica Slinger (Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth Regional) and senior Diane Washer (Ogdensburg, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional) fought the Jaspers' MacTaggart and Tsao but was ultimately defeated in the end, 8-5 in second doubles. In third doubles action, teammates Ferrari and senior Kelly Friedrich (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) lost in the match's second closest doubles game, 8-4.
Monmouth is now 2-2 overall against Manhattan dating back to 2005-06, with the Jaspers taking the last two matchups.
The loss dropped the Hawks to 0-2 while Manhattan moves to 1-0 on the young season for both squads.
The Blue and White return to the hard courts this weekend when they travel to Annapolis, Md. for the Navy Tournament on Friday, September 25th-27th.
