WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Monmouth University fell to visiting Lehigh University, 2-1, in double overtime on The Great Lawn, on Sunday afternoon. With the overtime defeat, the Hawks fall to 4-3, ending their four-game win streak, while Lehigh improves to 5-2-1 overall.
Lehigh's Liz Carlos poked the ball just under a sliding
Lia Fierro 1:10 into the second overtime to break the 1-1 tie. Ali MacLeod carried the ball to the touch line, and delivered the ball into the box, which Carlos tapped in for the game-winner at 101:10.
Lehigh opened the scoring at 20:20, when Lena Cannon found Natalie Hojnacki 25 yards out in the middle of the field, as the senior laced a shot into the upper corner of the net for a 1-0 edge.
Monmouth knotted the score at 1-1 at 77:39 when
Mary Wilks' throw-in from the far side was flicked on by
April Damurjian, and found
Kim Malecki's foot at the far post. Malecki, who registered her second goal of the season, put one touch on the ball and drilled it into the upper ninety.
"Overall we did not play to our potential today," stated head coach
Krissy Turner. "When you are playing at home you need to be sharp and we weren't in the first half."
The shot attempts in the game were even at 9-9, while the Hawks held a 6-0 edge in corner kicks in the match.
Fierro made three saves in goal for Monmouth, while Lehigh netminder Lauren Mains made one stop.
"Our next opponent is a very good team and we will need to play much better to have some success," added Turner.
Monmouth returns to action on Saturday, when the Hawks host Navy on The Great Lawn, at 11:00 am.
