NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Senior Andrea Lopez and junior Mary Wilks each tallied a goal and an assist, as the Monmouth University women's soccer team posted a 3-0 road victory at Iona, in non-conference action, on Friday night, the Hawks second straight shutout. With the win, the Hawks even their record at 2-2 overall.
"This was a solid win on the road," commented head coach Krissy Turner, whose win total at Monmouth reached 115, "We received contributions from a lot of players today, and in tough conditions, we scored some great goals."
Monmouth, now 7-0 all-time against Iona on the pitch, went ahead 1-0 at 36:06 when Lopez notched her second goal of the year on a rebound off an Iona defender.
The Hawks, competing with a player down in the second half after a straight red card, tallied two more scores after the 64th minute to pull away.
At 64:10, Wilks' header off Jackie Grodotzke's free kick service, put MU ahead 2-0, while Wilks and Lopez each carded assists on BrieAnne Nomejko's score at 76:32.
Monmouth outshot Iona 17-12 in the contest, forcing Iona's Kelly Mahoney to make seven saves. Junior Lia Fierro registered her second straight shutout, and 17th overall during her career, tying a career-high with nine saves for Monmouth.
Monmouth returns to action on Sunday, when the Hawks travel to Saint Peter's for a non-conference contest, at 1 p.m.
