WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Monmouth University senior Alessandra DeTata notched her first goal of the season, the game-winning score, in the 87th minute, to pace the women's soccer squad to a 1-0 Northeast Conference victory over Wagner on Friday afternoon.
The Hawks' victory over the Seahawks on The Great Lawn, pushed Monmouth's record to 6-3-1 overall, and 1-0-1 in the NEC. Wagner falls to 1-8-1, and 0-2 in the league.
"We continue to play good attacking soccer," commented head coach Krissy Turner. "To get another shutout is an accomplishment, thanks to our team defending."
On the play, sophomore Courtney Snyder carried the ball down the right flank and found DeTata in the middle of the field, as the midfielder directed a shot into the far netting, past Wagner goalkeeper Samantha Schueschner.
The Hawks nearly went in front 1-0 with 20 minutes remaining in the opening half as Mary Wilks' cross into the box found defender Ali Kliment's head. The junior nodded a shot on frame, but the ball skimmed off the crossbar.
Monmouth held a 15-3 advantage in shots, paced by both Snyder and Gianna Russo, who had five apiece. The Hawks also held a 7-0 edge in corner kick opportunities.
Lia Fierro, who helped lead Monmouth to its seventh shutout on the season, her 22nd in her career, made one save for the Hawks. Schueschner made four saves for Wagner.
Monmouth returns to action on Sunday, October 4th, when the Hawks host Long Island University on The Great Lawn, in Northeast Conference action. The program's "Fan Appreciation Day" will begin at 1 p.m.
