WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. ? The Monmouth University women's soccer team registered a 4-2 victory over visiting Saint Peter's, on The Great Lawn, on Sunday afternoon. Monmouth, which is now unbeaten in its last six matches, improves to 7-1-1 overall on the season, while Saint Peter's falls to 3-6.
Junior Alessandra DeTata collected a pass from classmate Andrea Lopez to put the Hawks in front 1-0 in the 20th minute of action, before Illiana Blackshear gave Monmouth a 2-0 lead at 25:29.
Saint Peter's trimmed the lead to 2-1 at 30:04, when Courtney Sundstrom was fed a pass from Alexandrea Keddie, netting her second score of the year.
The Blue and White pushed the lead to 3-1 before intermission when freshman Jennie Vartebedian knocked in a cross from Leanne Clarke off a free kick along the right flank.
SPC's Loren Rich pulled the Peahens within 3-2 at 63:09 when her direct kick service sailed into the far netting, over Monmouth goalkeeper Katie Buffa.
Monmouth senior Joanna DeMoor gave the Hawks an insurance goal in the 81st minute, as the forward posted her fifth tally of the season, making the score 4-2. DeMoor deposited a cross from DeTata into the net.
Monmouth outshot Saint Peter's 23-8 in the contest, forcing SPC netminder Leigha Ashmen to make 10 saves. Buffa, who allowed both scores, made one save in goal for the Hawks in 76:30 of action. Lia Fierro maded one save as well in the final 13:30.
The Blue and White, which are now 20-1-2 at home since the 2006 season, held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks as well.
Monmouth returns to action on Friday, October 3rd, when the Hawks host Sacred Heart, in the NEC opener, at 3 p.m., on The Great Lawn.
