WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. ? The Monmouth University men's soccer team claimed their consecutive win with a 1-0 overtime triumph over in-state rival Princeton on Thursday afternoon on The Great Lawn. After two consecutive Monmouth shots and saves from Princeton goalie Joe Walter to begin to the overtime period, sophomore forward Chase Barbieri (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) came in and one-touched the ball past the Tiger keeper to give the Hawks the win 14 seconds into extra time. The win, MU's first ever over the Princeton men's soccer program, moves the Hawks to 4-1-1, while the Tigers drop to 1-5.
“Chase continues to be in great form this season,” said Monmouth head coach Robert McCourt. “This was important for us to find a way to get a win against a very good Princeton team.”
The Hawks controlled most of the match's tempo, outshooting the Tigers 11-6, including 3-0 in the overtime period. Barbieri controlled the ball to begin the overtime and played it ahead to Ryan Kinne (Naugatuck, Conn./Naugatuck), who fired a shot that was saved. Teammate Rob LaRocca (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) came in and got a shot off that was also saved before Barbieri finished what he started and slotted home his fifth goal of the season.
Bryan Meredith (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) made two saves for Monmouth to log his fourth straight shutout, while Walter made five stops for the Tigers. Monmouth held a 9-8 advantage on corner kicks in the contest, and the Hawks committed more fouls, 14-12.
Monmouth returns to action on Sunday when they host La Salle at 2:00 p.m. on The Great Lawn.
