LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. ? Monmouth University senior forward Joni DeMoor (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) notched the game-winning goal, just 58 seconds into the match, to pace the Hawks to a 1-0 victory season-opening victory at Rider, on Sunday. DeMoor knocked in the eventual game winner off an assist from classmate Illiana Blackshear (West Orange, N.J./West Orange), as the Hawks open the 2008 campaign 1-0. Rider falls to 0-2-1 on the season.
“It was a solid performance from the entire team,” said head coach Krissy Turner. “Obviously, scoring so early set the tone for the match.“
Monmouth, coming off a 2007 Northeast Conference Championship, outshot the Broncs 19-8 in the match, forcing Rider goalkeeper Alex Post to make eight saves. Hawks' sophomore goalkeeper Lia Fierro (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) made three saves for the shutout.
The Hawks also held an 8-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities in the match, while both Andrea Lopez (Oakhurst, N.J./Ocean Township) and Blackshear each fired five shots for the Blue and White.
The victory was also Coach Turner's 100th career win at Monmouth.
Monmouth returns to action on Friday, September 5, when the Hawks host Lafayette at 4:00 p.m., on The Great Lawn.
