WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J.-
Monmouth University's women's basketball team cruised to a 91-65 win over cross-state rival Princeton on Wednesday night at Boylan Gym, ending a five-game losing streak.
The effort was by far the best of the season by the Hawks, who scored the most points in a non-overtime game since dropping 101 on Robert Morris on Feb. 5, 2001. Monmouth shot 50 percent from the floor, hit 75 percent of its free throws and out-rebounded the Tigers by a 50-30 margin.
"We spent the last five days focusing on intensity," said Head Coach Michele Baxter. "We tweaked a couple of things on our press and getting the ball up the floor and I thought we did a really good job at both of those aspects. Having Bri (Brianne Edwards) back gave us confidence. Brianne is one of our leaders and she took a lot of pressure off of the other players."
The Hawks expanded on their five point halftime lead with a 8-2 run to start up the second half, including three pointers by guards Brianne Edwards (Bloomfield, Conn./Suffield) and Veronica Randolph (Deerfield Beach, Fla./Deerfield Beach), to take a commanding 41-28 lead with 16:25 left in the game. Randolph hit her third three pointer of the game to balloon the lead to 48-30 as the MU defense continued to force turnovers and earn rebounds. Senior Nyaimah Ware (Washington D.C./Dunbar) tallied four straight points for the Hawks, including a layup off of a impressive Rachel Ferdinand (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) bounce pass.
With 9:44 to play MU was ahead 61-40, Brooke McElroy nailed her first three pointer of the night, then followed it up with a layup, giving Monmouth a 26 point lead, its largest of the night. Junior Jennifer Bender (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Tech) scored her 14th point of the night after getting fouled on a successful layup and draining the ensuing free throw. Down by 29, the Tigers scored six straight points including four from Megan Cowher, who led the visitors with 18 points at that point. After an 8-0 run by Princeton prompted Baxter to call a timeout, the Hawks got two points from Marbely Montas (Cranford, N.J./Elizabeth) but Princeton scored six points in that span, closing the gap to 78-61. The Hawk offense turned it on in the final three minutes, eventually clinching the 91-65 victory.
Monmouth took an early lead on a Ferdinand reverse layup, which quickly became a 6-1 lead before Princeton's Addie Micir hit a three pointer to cut the lead to a pair. MU answered back with a LaKia Barber (Clinton, Md./Gwynn Park) jumper before Randloph answered a Shelbie Pool three ball with a shot from long range of her own, giving the Hawks a 13-9 advantage. The Tigers took their first lead of the game on a Cowher jumpshot after Micir hit her second three pointer of the night. The two teams traded the lead with MU holding a 17-16 lead with 9:48 left in the first half. Princeton knotted the game at 19 with its fourth three of the half, this time from guard Krystal Hill. Barber gave the Hawks a 25-21 lead on a turnaround jumper with 4:42 to play. Edwards drained a pair of free throws to give MU a 27-21 advantage, its biggest lead since the opening minutes.
Monmouth continued to hit the glass and score on the ensuing opportunities opening up a 29-21 lead with just over three minutes to play in the half. The Tigers were able to close a little going into the break, with MU taking a 31-26 lead into the locker room. Monmouth ended the half shooting 44.4 percent from the floor and out-rebounding the Tigers by a 24-12 margin.
Bender led the Hawks with 19 points and 11 rebounds (tying a career-high), her second double-double of the season. She also had three steals in the game. Randolph finished with 15 points and five dimes, while Barber had 14 points in the win. Guard Marisa Jimenez (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) had nine points and a season high six assists.
The game marked the first time in which the Hawks have scored over 60 points, improving their record to 2-9 on the season. Monmouth also had a season high 20 assists (compared to just 19 turnovers) and shot 50% or better from the floor for the first time this year. Princeton, who drops to 3-12 with the loss, shot just 37 percent in the game. It was the first win at home for the Hawks of the 2007-08 season.
Cowher was the game's leading scorer with 20 points, adding nine rebounds to lead the Tigers. Hill and Whitney Downs finished with nine points each in the contest.
MU returns to the court on Jan. 5, when they face St. Francis (Pa.) in Loretto at 2 p.m.
