EASTON, PA. - Monmouth University sophomore
Andrea Lopez registered a goal and an assist, while senior
Amy Hoyer netted her second game-winning goal in three games, to pace the women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Lafayette on Wednesday night at Oaks Stadium. The win improves the Hawks' record to 3-2-3 on the season, while MU held Lafayette (2-7) winless at home.
After a scoreless first half, Monmouth cracked the scoreboard first, 2:13 into the second stanza, as freshman
Kim Malecki beat the Leopards' goalkeeper at the top of the box and found an open Lopez for the tap-in and her third goal of the season. The helper was Malecki's first collegiate point.
The Leopards knotted the score at 1-1, in the 59th minute, when Caroline Tuttle lifted a corner kick, which was nodded in by Megan Hillin for her first tally of the year.
At 68:00, Lopez was credited with an assist, as Hoyer converted her second goal of the campaign off a rebound shot from Lopez.
Monmouth held an 18-5 advantage in shots, including a 14-2 edge in the second half, forcing Lafayette's Brittany Futterknech to make six saves. Monmouth's freshman goalkeeper
Lia Fierro made two saves for the Hawks.
Monmouth returns to action on Friday, when the Hawks host NJIT in their final non-conference match of the year, at 3 p.m.
