IONA'S TWO FIRST HALF GOALS STOPS MEN'S SOCCER AT HOME

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Iona College junior Aly Lo registered two first half goals to lead the Gaels to a 2-1 win over Monmouth in men's soccer action, on The Great Lawn, on Saturday afternoon, ending the Hawks' home unbeaten streak at 13 matches. The Hawks fall to 4-2-1, while the Gaels improve to 3-5-0 on the year.

"Iona came in with a lot of commitment to the cause," said head coach Robert McCourt. "From the opening whistle they battled hard and deserved the win."

Iona pressed early, generating three corner kicks and three shots in the opening 10 minutes of play. Bryan Oelkers sent a ball across the front of the six to Lo for Iona's first score. Lo, at the far post put a one-timer on net, which bounced off Monmouth goalkeeper Daniel Schenkel, off the post and into the net.

At 40:36, Lo netted his third goal of the season, as the striker directed a shot at the near post, which deflected off Monmouth defender Daniel Bostock's boot and just inside the near bar.

Monmouth pulled within a goal at 76:07 when senior Tom Gray sent a free kick into the box, which Dan Haydu chested directly to Damon Wilson, who found the net, passed Nils Binstock. The Hawks nearly knotted the score with 11 minutes remaining when senior Michael Millar's cross to the top of the box found Haydu's foot, but Haydu's attempt struck the crossbar.

The Hawks held a 16-7 advantage in shots, out-shooting the Gaels 11-1 in the second half. Binstock made five saves in net for Iona, improving his record on the year to 3-5, while Schenkel made one save in the opening 45 minutes for the Hawks. Freshman Bryan Meredith played the final half for the Blue and White, allowing no goals.

Monmouth returns to action on Thursday, September 27, when the Hawks travel to Princeton for a non-conference match at 7:30 p.m.
