The Monmouth University women's soccer team battled to its second straight draw on Sunday afternoon, as the Hawks tied Lehigh University, 2-2, on The Great Lawn. The tie improves the Hawks' record to 1-2-2 on the season, while the Mountain Hawks are now 3-1-2. The last five matches in this series have been decided by a goal or less.
Monmouth got on the scoreboard first, at 12:02, when senior Amy Hoyer (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington) lifted a corner kick service into the box, which was nodded in by classmate Brittani Heller (Newton, N.J./Newton), her first goal of the year.
Trailing 1-0 heading into the second half of play, Lehigh netted the next two goals to take a 2-1 advantage. Glynn Fitzer headed in a cross from Liz Carlos at 55:46 to knot the contest at 1-1. Carlos put Lehigh ahead 4:09 later, as she took a feed from Lena Cannon and beat Monmouth goalkeeper Lia Fierro (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) to the far net.
Monmouth rebounded and tied the score at 2-2 in the 76th minute, when sophomore Andrea Lopez (Oakhurst, N.J./Ocean Township) collected a ball and beat two Lehigh defenders in the box, netting her second score of the year.
Fierro made two saves in goal for the Hawks, while both Julia Kafka and Lauren Mains made six saves each for Lehigh. Kafka started the match, making six stops in the first half. Mains earned the draw by making six saves in the second stanza and both overtime periods.
Monmouth fired 25 shots in the match, putting 14 on goal, while the Mountain Hawks attempted six shots in the match.
Monmouth returns to action on Friday, when the Hawks host Rider in a non-conference match on The Great Lawn at 3 p.m.
