WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. -
Monmouth University senior
Tom Gray (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South), a Hermann Trophy Watch List performer, registered a goal and an assist to lead the Hawks to a 2-1 win over Delaware on Saturday afternoon. The victory improves the Hawks' record to 4-1 on the season, while Delaware falls to 0-5, all road contests.
Monmouth netted its first goal, 1:49 before the intermission, as Gray lifted a free kick into the box, which senior Damon Wilson (Swedesboro, N.J./St. Andrew's) put on goal. The shot deflected off a Delaware defender and bounced in off the post, giving the Hawks a 1-0 edge.
Wilson's work in the corner led to Monmouth's second goal, in the 57th minute. Wilson worked the ball out of the corner and found Gray at the top edge of the box. Gray then struck a shot into the far net, passed Blue Hen goalkeeper Taylor Thames, putting the Hawks ahead 2-0.
Delaware trimmed the lead to 2-1 at 78:46, when Tal Blau worked along the touch line and found Tolu Olowolafe in front of the net for a one-timer. The score was Olowolafe's first of the season.
Monmouth held a 17-7 advantage in shots in the match, as Gray attempted a game-high four strikes, accounting for his team-best fourth goal of the year. Senior goalkeeper Daniel Schenkel (Campo Verde, Brazil) made five saves for the Blue and White, while Thames also made five stops for Delaware.
Monmouth's 4-1 mark is the best start in the program's history after five games since the 1985 season, when the Hawks opened up at 4-1, en route to a 13-win campaign.
Monmouth, which is now 3-0 at home and on a 13-game home unbeaten streak, returns to action on Wednesday, September 19 when the Hawks host George Mason on The Great Lawn, at 3:00 p.m.
