GoMUHawks.com caught up with Monmouth freshman wide receiver just before the season started and asked him 10 questions ranging from the adjustment from high school to college and the switch from the West to the East coast.
MU: How did you end up at Monmouth University. Where else were you
recruited to play/given scholarship offers from?
TY: I was set on going to University of Pennsylvania because my dad wanted me to get an Ivy League education. It ended up not working out with Penn, and the Receivers Coach sent my tape over to Monmouth and Coach Fabish recruited me from then on. I was offered from UC Davis, Northern Arizona, Portland State and after I committed UNLV offered but I already gave my word that I would be playing here so I told them no.
MU: What made you pick Monmouth over those other schools? What did you
know about MU's football program before committing to Monmouth?
TY: I really loved the campus and the coaches. They were very honest to me and didn't tell me just what I wanted to hear like most of the other schools. Before my visit here I wasn't too familiar with Monmouth, but after I knew that they work hard on and off the field which was very important for me.
MU: How have you adjusted to moving out to the East Coast, moving from
California?
TY: It hasn't been too bad. I am still close to the beach (although I haven't been able to enjoy that part yet). The time difference is definitely the hardest part. I'm constantly playing phone tag with my family and friends because they call either when I am at practice or sleeping, and when I call them back they are either sleeping or doing something else.
MU: What other sports did you play in High School? What other positions
in football?
TY: I played shortstop as a freshmen and sophomore for the varsity baseball team. I also played safety and corner in high school.
MU: How are you enjoying your college football experience so far?
TY: I love it. I can't wait to play in a game.
MU: What has been the biggest challenge so far in preseason camp?
Competing against the older guys is definitely tougher. They are faster and stronger than anyone I played against in High School.
MU: What other players have impressed you? Which Veterans? Which fellow
Rookies?
Adam San Miguel is unbelievable. All of the quarterbacks have played really well. The whole team has been pretty impressive so far.
MU: Have any of the Upper-Classman helped you in picking up the
offense/schemes since coming to Monmouth?
Ron Lauch and Rodney Salomon have helped me out a lot. Chris Kiley has also helped me out.
MU: Which classes in the fall are you looking forward to taking?
TY: I don't have my classes set yet. So I am not sure what I am going to be taking. If I had to choose a favorite subject it would be Math.
MU: Have you spent anytime in West Long Branch other than on the
football field? What have you done?
All I have gotten to do is practice so far. Before camp started my mom and I went shopping at the mall and to a movie one night. That's all of the fun I have had off of the football field so far.
