LATE FIRST HALF RALLY SPRINGS HAWKS PAST TERRIERS, 65-47

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J.- After trailing by 10 early in the first half, Monmouth University's women's basketball team outscored St. Francis (N.Y.) 31-18 in the second frame to close out a 65-47 victory at Boylan Gym.

With a season-high crowd of 1,785 in the building to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports day, the Hawk defense allowed just 47 points, the least amount all season.

MU found its five point-halftime lead balloon to 10 points, after Monmouth rattled off a 7-2 run to start the first three minutes of the second frame.  SFNY closed to within four with 12:46 but Brianne Edwards (Bloomfield, Conn./Suffield Academy) fired up a three-pointer to give MU a 44-37 lead.  MU's Nyaimah Ware (Washington, D.C./Dunbar) hit an open jumper as the shot clock expired to give Monmouth a 49-37 lead, their largest of the game.  With 7:34 left to play, Veronica Randolph (Deerfield Beach, Fla./Deerfield Beach) hit a three pointer to put the Hawks ahead by 20, 57-37.  The Terriers would not be able to cut the double-digit lead, as Monmouth ended up winning the contest, 65-47

Monmouth fell behind early to the Terriers, as the Hawks struggled to find the bottom of the net, SFNY built a 11-2 lead in the first three and a half minutes.  MU's Edwards stopped the scoreless streak at the 15:55 mark with a jumper.  After trailing by nine, the Hawks cut the lead to six on a put back by Jennifer Bender (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island).  At the halfway point of the firs half, Edwards gathered a defensive rebound then went coast to coast and ended with a layup to get the Hawks to within 15-13.  Edwards then tied the game with a jumper in the lane after the Hawks forced a turnover.  The tie game didn't last long though, as Linda Warrington hit a three pointer, snapping an 8-0 Monmouth run and giving Saint Francis an 18-15 advantage.

Down by five with under five minutes to play, Marisa Jimenez (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) converted a tradition three-point play to get the Hawks within two.  Seconds later the sophomore guard tied the game after hitting a pair of free throws after being fouled going for a steal.  It was her sixth point in an 11 second time frame.  It took until the 3:00 minute mark for the Hawks to take their first lead of the game, with a Randolph three pointer giving the Hawks a two-point cushion.  Randolph followed that up with a layup on the next Hawk possession to give the Hawks a - lead.  The first half wrapped up with Ferdinand tipping in a last-second rebound as MU went to the lockeroom up 34-29.

The Terriers had three players in double digits, including Tiffany Hill and Katja Bavendam, who each finished with 13.  Warrington had 10 points on the game.

Edwards led the Hawks with 15 points and eight rebounds.  Jimenez had 14 points, while Randolph had eight in the game.  Rachel Ferdinand (Clifton, N.J./Vorhees) had six rebounds for the hawks, while chipping in five points.  MU's bench outscored the Terriers' reserves 20-2.

Monmouth, which moves to13-8 overall and 6-4 in the NEC, now owns a 24-1 series advantage at home against Saint Francis (N.Y.), who falls to 8-13 overall.  The 47 points allowed by MU's defense is the lowest allowed this season.  MU shot 53 percent from the floor in the game, while the Terriers were 34 percent.  MU also tallied a 36-23 margin on the glass in the game.

Monmouth begins a four-game road swing on Monday when they travel to face Saint Francis (Pa.).
