The Monmouth University women's tennis team had a busy weekend, with their most recent action coming as they participated in the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (NJAIAW) Tennis Tournament at Drew University in Madison, N.J. on Saturday and Sunday.

The Hawks had a very successful tournament, winning seven of their nine first round matches, and boasting four semi-finalists, including Kelly Friedrich  (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) who won the “D” flight singles competition. She went a perfect 5-0 at the tournament.

Diane Washer (Ogdensburg, N.J./Wallkill Valley) advanced all the way to the finals in “C” flight singles, while Katie Tierney (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) won the “B” flight consolation final. Kaitlin Gallagher  (North Haledon, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) finished in a third-place tie in the “A” flight, while Tara Warner (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach) finished in a third place tie in flight “D”.

The Hawks also defeated Manhattan 5-2 this past Friday in nonconference action in Riverdale N.Y.

The Hawks were led by Sarah Ragan (Lanoka Harbor, N.J./Lacey Township) who had a three set win over Casey Conklin at second singles, 3-6, 6-1 and 6-3. Kristen Hoffman (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) followed suit with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Lindsay Spagnola at fourth singles, as Diane Washer won a three set marathon 4-6, 7-5 and 10-6 over Malory Ngyuen at fifth singles and Chrissy Cella (Spotswood, N.J./Spotswood) won as her opponent retired in the first set at sixth singles.

In doubles action, the team of Ragan and Kaitlin Gallagher won 9-8 (3) at first doubles, while the team of Hoffman and Friedrich won as the Manhattan duo of Mazza/Spagnola retired.
