The Monmouth University women's basketball team (10-7, 4-3 NEC) travels to Newark to take on in-state foe and Division I newcomer New Jersey Institute of Technology on January 23 at 7 p.m. The Hawks and Highlanders meeting is the first between the Garden State teams.
The Hawks are coming off a 73-65 win over Central Connecticut State on Saturday in New Britain. MU was paced by Brianne Edwards (Bloomfield, Conn./Suufield) and Jennifer Bender (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Tech) who each scored 16 points in the win. Bender scored 12 of her points in the second half as Monmouth held off a Blue Devil rally for the win.
MU shot 56.8 % from the floor for the game, while holding CCSU to 34.0 % field goal shooting. Marisa Jimenez (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) chipped in with 13 points, while Veronica Randolph (Deerfield Beach, Fla./Deerfield Beach) added eight points, five assists and a career-high six steals.
This game marks the final non-conference tilt of the 2006-2007 season for the Hawks, who currently sit in fifth place in the Northeast Conference, half a game behind Quinnipiac for the fourth seed. The teams that finish the season in the top four in the NEC earn home playoff games.
