BOX SCOREWEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Monmouth University women's basketball team put forth a valiant effort, but ultimately fell to St. John's 54-46 Saturday afternoon in Jamaica, Queens. The loss drops the Hawks to 4-3 on the season, while the Red Storm improves to 2-4.
Monmouth was paced by
Jennifer Bender (Staten Island, N.Y./State Island Tech) and
Brianne Edwards (Bloomfield, Conn./Suffield), who each had eight points. Edwards also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
Defense was the word of the day as both teams shot right around 30 % for the game. The teams shot identical 8-of-28 field goals from the floor in the first half, but the Johnnies went into intermission up 23-20.
The action picked up in the second half, but Monmouth was unable to inch closer to the Red Storm, ultimately falling by eight points. St. John's led by as many 12 points with around 10 minutes to go in the game, and kept the Hawks at bay.
Monique McClean led St. John's with a game-high 26 points, while teammate Tiina Sten added 15 points and nine rebounds.
A trio of Hawks added seven points apiece as
LaKia Barber (Clinton, Md./Gwynn Park),
Marisa Jimenez (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) and
Nyaimah Ware (Washington, D.C./Dunbar) provided some spark on offense.
Monmouth returns to action when they host the N.Y. Gazelles in an exhibition game on Wednesday, December 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Boylan Gym.
