MEN & WOMEN WIN WAGNER INVITE

STATEN ISLAND, NY – Both the Monmouth men's and women's track and field programs finished 1st out of 12 teams at the Wagner Invite on Friday at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex. The Hawks were led by senior Corey Murphy's shot put mark of 18.88 meters to win the event.
 
NOTES AND QUOTES
  • "For our first meet back, this was an encouraging day. We know we have a ton to work, but it was a positive start to the year in most areas," said coach Joe Compagni.
  • The men compiled 135.5 points, beating 2nd place Army (69) and 10 other division 1 programs.
  • The women scored 101 points, beating 2nd place St. Joseph's (78) and 10 other schools.
  • Murphy's shot put mark was good enough to qualify for the IC4A's and is also one of the best throws in the collegian ranks currently. His teammates Andrew Tummino, Brandon Davis and Dan Gilligan finished 2nd, 4th and 6th in the event.
  • Bryan Sosoo won the 60 meters with a time of 6.82 seconds. Sosoo also finished third in the triple jump at 14.38 with teammate Michael Pepper finishing first at 14.62 meters.
  • Malcolm Chavis took home the win for the Hawks in the 400 meter dash (49.72)
  • Dylan Capwell continued his strong season by winning the 800 meter run in 1:51.49
  • Christopher Marco finished as the top collegian performer and qualified for the IC4A's in the mile by finishing in 4:08.03.
  • Tim Wilson finished 1st in the weight throw with a 19.24 meter effort.
  • The 4x400 meter relay team of Bryan Cabral, Nick McFarland, Marco, and Chavis took 5th overall in 3:23.80.
  • Chandi Piiru (2:11.87) and Brianna Stratz (2:12.61) finished as the first and second best collegian performers in the 800 meters and qualified for the ECAC's.
  • Amber Stratz (4:58.10) and Allie Wilson (4:58.63) also finished as the top collegian runners in the mile and also qualified for the ECAC Championships.
  • The women's 4x400 relay team of Stratz, Stratz, Wilson, and Piiru won the event in a time of 3:55.39.
  • Viviane Orleans finished 4th in the 60 meter hurdles in a time of 9.09 seconds.
  • Megan Gambuti finished in a tie for 4th in the pole vault at 3.30 meters.
  • After the meet, the Monmouth men were ranked #59 in the country in the initial USTFCCCA rankings for the 300+ NCAA Division 1 track & field programs.
  • Capwell and Murphy are both ranked 4th in the country so far this season, while Wilson is ranked 14th. 
NEXT UP
  • The Hawks will compete next Saturday, January 13 at the Angry Birds Challenge in Bethlehem, PA. Action begins at 10 AM.
