Gary Kowal joined the Monmouth University Athletics staff in July 2013 as an Athletics Communications Assistant, and became the Assistant Athletics Director for Communications and New Media in 2015. In November 2023, Kowal was named Executive Associate Athletics Director, and oversees the external relations unit, including communications, marketing, ticketing, live broadcast, creative content and corporate sponsorship.

Kowal is the primary sport contact for men’s basketball, and has served in that role since October 2015. In his time at Monmouth, Kowal has served as the sport administrator for baseball, men's soccer, and men's and women's golf. He has served on several coaching search committees, including women's basketball, women's golf and men's golf.

Under Kowal, the department's relationship with SportsNet New York (SNY) and NBC Sports Philadelphia has grown, with over 100 Monmouth Athletics events in 10 different sports airing on those linear networks since 2022, all self produced by the Monmouth Digital Network.

Kowal took over men’s basketball responsibilities in October 2015, and immediately handled numerous national and local media requests following five wins over high-major programs and the emergence of the “Monmouth Bench”. King Rice appeared live on ESPN’s College GameDay on Selection Sunday, as well as making multiple appearances on WFAN-AM in New York and on Sirius-XM satellite radio. The “Monmouth Bench” appeared live on The TODAY Show and ESPN’s Sports Center.

In addition to men’s basketball, Kowal worked with Monmouth baseball from 2014 through 2023 and covered MU track and field and cross country as well as women’s bowling in his first two years. He has also spent time working in a communications role with men's lacrosse, and has assisted with football for the last 12 seasons. From 2013-2014, Kowal was a voter on the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) Top-20 Media Poll.

Kowal is a 2013 graduate of Monmouth, where he completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in communication after spending his final year as a student assistant in the Athletics Communications department. He worked at WMCX 88.9FM, where he coordinated all sports broadcasting for his final two years and covered Monmouth Athletics for four years. Kowal completed internships at SportsNet New York, WKTU, and NFL Films as well as working as a production assistant for three seasons with the Lakewood BlueClaws, the Single-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Kowal is a 2013 Monmouth graduate and 2009 graduate of Indian Hills High School, and a native of Oakland, NJ.
