Bill Gilbert is in his first season as an assistant on the Hawks? softball coaching staff. His primary responsibility is mentoring Monmouth?s pitching corps.
Gilbert arrives in Monmouth after spending three years as a coach at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. At UNC Pembroke, he helped the pitching staff lower its team earned run average in each of his three years.
Gilbert also made collegiate coaching stops at Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C. and Bellevue (Wash.) Community College. At Catawba, he served as assistant coach in 1998 and 1999, mentoring an all-conference pitcher. He had two stints as an assistant at Bellevue, serving as pitching coach in 1997 and 1998 and outfield and baserunning coach in 1994 and 1995. He also spent one year as a head coach at Ingraham High School in Seattle and served as an assistant coach at Highline High School in Burien, Wash., Bellevue (Wash.) High School and Totem Junior High School in Federal Way, Washington.
Gilbert also possesses international coaching experience. During the summer of 2000, he served as coach for Enkoping Softboll Klubb in Sweden. While in Scandinavia, he also served as head coach for the Swedish Junior National Team, leading them to a first-place showing at the Scandinavian Softball Championships and a fifth-place finish at the European Junior National Championships.
Active in the softball scene, Gilbert played men?s fastpitch for 13 years as a pitcher and corner infielder. He has also worked numerous pitching camps and clinics at all levels and has been invited to help develop junior pitchers in the United Kingdom.
Gilbert is a 1983 graduate of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in political science. He also received a secondary education teaching certificate in history, government and social studies from the state of Louisiana while at Northeast Louisiana in Monroe, La.
