Michael Schwartz completed his 12th year as Assistant Coach of the Monmouth men's tennis team in 2021-22.
In 2020-21, he was named ITA Northeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
After spending over 35 years in the Business world, which included being a Vice President at a Fortune 500 Company, as well as being a Regional Manager for Porsche Cars North America, Schwartz retired from business, and to continue to pursue his lifelong passion for tennis.
His coaching career started by volunteer coaching at his High School Alma Mater, DeWitt Clinton, in the Bronx, New York. Schwartz helped to lead Clinton to three PSAL Playoff Seasons. He then transferred his coaching skills to JFK High School, an inner City school, also in the Bronx. He helped to lead JFK to a magical season of 13-0, winning a PSAL City Championship, defeating an elite Manhattan school.
Schwartz played three years at Clinton, then entered a New York State Tournament, unseeded, where he came in 2nd, he defeated a Nationally Ranked Junior player, in the Semi's, earning recognition in Sports Illustrated "Faces in the News". He was recruited, and played for The University of Alabama, where he accepted both, a tennis and ROTC Scholarship. In his Senior year of 1966, Schwartz had his best year for The Crimson Tide, achieving a 20-6 record, and receiving an Honorable Mention, All- SEC award.
Schwartz received a Bachelor's degree in Business (Marketing) from the Culverhouse School of Commerce, as well as an Army Commission from the ROTC Program After graduation, Schwartz served 13 months in Vietnam, as an Intelligence Officer, with the 173rd Airborne Brigade.
In 2017, Schwartz started the Monmouth University Summer Tennis Camp. The program has had a successful history in the local Deal, Long Branch, Rumson and Fairhaven communities. Current Division I players, as well as former nationally-ranked players, have participated in the program as both coaches, as well as guests.
Schwartz has helped guide the Hawks to six consecutive Conference Championships. He has also helped to mentor many of his players to get started in promising business careers.
Schwartz, lives in Little Silver, New Jersey, with his wife, Nayda Sierra-Schwartz, a retired LCSW Psychotherapist. Michael's daughter, Melissa Sophia, a Rutgers grad, lives with her son, Ryder, in Columbia, Missouri.
