mfriel@monmouth.eduMatt Friel, a 2000 graduate of Rutgers University, is in his second season as an assistant men?s soccer coach at Monmouth University, under second-year head coach Robert McCourt.
Friel, a four-year player for the Scarlet Knights from 1996-1999, patrolled the midfield and backline during his tenure on the "Banks" at Rutgers.
Friel played in 51 career matches for the Scarlet Knights, earning a starting assignment in eight games during that span.
He tallied two goals and four points for his career, posting both of his scores as a sophomore during the 1997 campaign.
Friel scored the game-winning goal versus Pittsburgh during the 1997 season, while he also collected Rutgers' third goal in a 3-3 draw with perennial national power, Indiana University.
After his playing career at Rutgers, Friel played with the New Jersey Stallions, winning a national championship in 2000. After the Stallions, where he played under Coach McCourt, Friel moved on to the Greenville Lions for two seasons, and then on to the Carolina Dynamo, where he captured yet another national championship in 2003.
Friel currently resides in Ocean Grove, N.J.
