An original assistant from head coach Kevin Callahan’s first coaching staff assembled in 1993, defensive coordinator Andy Bobik spent 29 seasons on the sidelines in West Long Branch. Bobik was named Monmouth's Associate Head Coach in 2009, a title he held through the 2022 season.

Bobik has mentored some of the most decorated players in Monmouth history, including four Associated Press All-Americans. Joe Sentipal became Monmouth's first All-American in 2002 when he secured third team honors, Kevin Walsh was a third team All-American in 2008 and Mike Basile was a two-time All-American, in 2016 (second team) and 2017 (first team). Bobik also coached former Washington Redskins safety Jose Gumbs, who donned the Blue and White from 2008-11.

The 2022 season was Monmouth's first as a member of the CAA and Bobik mentored Mike Reid as the junior corner earned Third Team All-CAA honors after finishing the year with 12 passes defended, 52 tackles, two forced fumbles and an interception. Reid's 11 pass breakups were the fifth most in the NCAA.

During Monmouth's run in the Big South Conference from 2014 through 2021, Monmouth defensive players earned all-league accolades 30 times. Safety Mike Basile earned major awards on two occasions, earning Big South Defensive Freshman of the Year in 2014 and Big South Defensive Player of the Year in 2017.

Monmouth's time as a member of the Northeast Conference (1996-2012) included 56 defensive all-conference selections and five Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Year awards, including Jason Gmitter (1997), Joe Sentipal (2002, 2003), Kevin Walsh (2008) and Jose Gumbs (2009). Gumbs also secured NEC Defensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2008.

In Bobik's tenure, the Hawks have fielded a number of outstanding defenses, including top-ranked defenses in the FCS in 2000, 2003, 2006 and 2020-21. The Hawks led the nation in sacks per game during the 2020-21 Spring Big South Championship season. In 2006, Bobik led the Hawk defense to the top-ranking in scoring defense, as Monmouth allowed just over 12 points per game en route to the NEC title. In 2003, Monmouth paced the nation in total defense, scoring defense and passing defense and earned a share of the NEC title. In 2000, the Hawks not only led the nation in total defense, but they were also the head of the class in pass defense and ranked in the top 10 in scoring defense.

Bobik was the defensive coordinator of Monmouth’s first two squads in 1993 and 1994. In 1995, he served as defensive coordinator at Wagner College and guided the nation’s fifth-best Division I-AA defense that season. While at Wagner, Bobik also served as assistant athletics director. He returned to Monmouth in 1996. Bobik initially arrived at Monmouth in 1993 after serving six years as defensive line coach at his alma mater, Colgate. Before his stint at Colgate, he served one year as linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator at West Chester (Pa.) University in 1986.

Bobik spent three seasons coaching at Cornell University from 1983 to 1985. He coached linebackers at Cornell the first two years and served as tight ends coach in his final season.

A native of Binghamton, N.Y., Bobik began his coaching career as an undergraduate at Colgate University. He coached the Red Raiders’ junior varsity in 1981 and 1982.

Bobik received his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Colgate in 1982. A linebacker at Colgate, Bobik earned one varsity letter before an injury ended his career.  Coach Bobik is married to the former Victoria Hopwood.
