Hawks Fall in Road Battle at College of Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C.  – The Monmouth men's basketball team fell to College of Charleston, 74-63, on Saturday afternoon in Charleston, S.C.

A pair of early connections from beyond the arc, including one from Stefanos Spartalis, gave the Hawks an 8-6 edge nearly five minutes in. Down by one, Monmouth scored six in a row to go up, 18-13 with 10:41 to go in the stanza. The Cougars used a 10-2 stretch of their own to retake the lead and eventually went ahead by four, 30-26. A pair of threes from Jinup Dobuol got the Hawks within a pair, 37-35. College of Charleston took a 39-35 lead at the break on a late basket. Spartalis scored a team-best nine points in the first 20 minutes.

The Cougars extended the lead to nine early in the second period before Jason Rivera-Torres hit from three, which sparked a 7-0 Monmouth run to get back within two, 46-44 with 13:50 to play.

Charleston scored 13 of the game's next 15 points, opening a 13-point lead before. Justin Ray did his best to ignite another Monmouth run, scoring the team's next eight points, but the Cougars went punch for punch and maintained an 11-point lead with 3:42 to play.

Monmouth was unable to get closer than nine in the final minutes, as the Cougars closed out the 74-63 victory.
