Miller's Buzzer-Beater Lifts Monmouth Over N.C. A&T in OT

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J.  – Corey Miller's buzzer-beater from near midcourt in overtime gave Monmouth University men's basketball team an 83-81 overtime victory on Thursday against North Carolina A&T.

The Hawks (11-11, 5-4 CAA) trailed by one with 4.2 seconds left in the extra session before Miller took the ball two steps over the timeline and banked in the game-winner as time expired.

Jason Rivera-Torres starred for Monmouth, scoring 26 points and grabbing nine rebounds, while Stefanos Spartalis added a career-best 21 points. Monmouth shot 84 percent from the free-throw line, including going a perfect 12-of-12 in the second half

Both teams started hot offensively, making nine of the game's first 13 shots, giving the Aggies an early 13-10 edge. Spartalis had 11 first-half points, helping the Hawks go on a 6-0 run to take a 29-26 lead at the 6:50 mark of the opening period. N.C. A&T closed the half on an 11-4 run, going into the intermission with a 37-33 edge. Rivera-Torres scored 10 points in the first 20 minutes for the Hawks.

A 7-0 spurt by the home team in the first three minutes of the second half tied the game at 40-40. The Aggies responded with an 8-0 run of their own to go up eight, 50-42. Four points from Spartalis allowed the Hawks to get back within four, 52-48, with 11:36 to play. The visitors went back up eight, but Monmouth continued to fight back, hitting four shots in a row to take the lead for the first time in the second period, 64-62.

A layup by Spartalis with under three minutes left gave Monmouth a 70-69 lead. With the game tied at 72 with 30 seconds on the clock, the Hawks could not score on the final possession of regulation, sending the game to overtime.

Each team scored on its first possession of the extra session, and neither team led by more than three at any point of overtime. After the Aggies hit a pair from the stripe to go up, 81-80, with 4.2 seconds left, Miller raced up the court and released a heave from just beyond midcourt that banked it at the buzzer, giving the Hawks the last-second victory.
