Monmouth Suffers CAA Loss to Delaware in Heartbreaking Fashion

West Long Branch, NJ - Monmouth found the equalizer with 00:08 remaining in regulation, but Delaware somewhat miraculously scored at the horn to steal a CAA women's lacrosse victory on Sunday at Kessler Stadium.

The Hawks erased a three-goal fourth-quarter deficit and pulled even at 9-9 when Danielle McNeely completed a pretty pass to the front of the net where Kate Carolonza buried it to seemingly force overtime.

Delaware, however, had other ideas. Cleanly winning the draw off to the left, Halen Saroney quickly dished it to Ella Rishko, who proceeded to set up the last-second gamewinner. With time about to expire, Rishko quickly passed to Delaney McDaniel who scored with zeros on the clock. The officials ruled that McDaniel beat the buzzer for a stunning victory.

With no team ever leading by more than two goals, there were four ties and four lead
changes over first three quarters.

Opening the fourth-quarter scoring, Delaware's Ella Rishko extended the lead to 9-6 with 10:15 remaining.

A few minutes later, McNeely provided a spark by scoring back-to-back goals separated by only 26 seconds. The second one, which was assisted by Maddie Flynn, pulled the Hawks to within a 9-8 margin with 5:39 left on the clock.

Monmouth's Sophia Ianno opened the game's scoring with an impressive unassisted effort 4:45 after the opening draw.

Shea Berigan scored two consecutive first-half goals for the Hawks, continuing her remarkable streak. She has recorded 2+ goals in 11 straight appearances.
