RICHMOND, Va. – Monmouth running back
Rodney Nelson has been named the CAA Offensive Player of the Week after one of the most dominant rushing performances in program history, leading the No. 9/10 Hawks to a 28–10 road victory over Hampton on Saturday night. Nelson carried the offense on his shoulders, rushing 33 times for a career-high 233 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 7.1 yards per carry and accounting for all four of Monmouth's scores in the win.
This marks the fifth time a Monmouth Hawk has won the weekly conference award, as Nelson joins himself (Week 6),
Josh Derry (Week 4),
Derek Robertson (Week 2) and his brother
Gavin Nelson (Week 1) as CAA Offensive Player of the Week winners.
Nelson's performance marked his second 200-yard game of the season and his fifth game with at least 150 rushing yards. The redshirt sophomore tailback has now logged five consecutive 100-yard rushing performances, tying the program record set by Jaden Shirden in 2022. His 233-yard output was the most by a Monmouth player since Shirden's 251 at William & Mary on Oct. 28, 2023, and represented the 20
th 200-yard rushing game in Monmouth history. Nelson became the first Hawk to score four rushing touchdowns in a game since
Sone Ntoh did so against Bryant on Oct. 19, 2024.
Nelson, now the leading rusher in FCS with 1,238 yards on the ground, and the Hawks (7-1, 4-0 CAA) carry a five-game win streak into a road matchup at Bryant at Towson on Saturday, November 1. The game will be broadcast live on FloCollege at 1 p.m.
