West Long Branch, N.J. – Connor Macrae scored off a rebound in double overtime to cap a thrilling comeback in the rain at Kessler Stadium Saturday, as Monmouth University Men's Lacrosse topped Mount St. Mary's 13-12 in two overtimes Saturday.
Trailing 4-0 after one, Monmouth got two goals within a minute from
Nick Teets and
Jake Schneider to go to the half down just three, MU trailed by four again in the third, but MU scored six of the next seven, including the tying goal at 4:26 of the third from
Matt Dollive and the go-ahead goal with 30 seconds left in the period from
Brendan Dundas. A back-and-forth final quarter saw MU get even with 2:40 to go on Dundas' third of the afternoon, and
Luke Cole gave Monmouth a 12-11 lead with 1:14 to go. The Mount tied it with 50 seconds remaining, and after a scoreless first OT, Macrae followed a save and fired into the top of the cage to win it for Monmouth.
Notes and Quotes
"The staff and I are proud of the guys and glad that we were able to win a game while not being at our best. We didn't have great focus nor play with any intensity coming out of the gate and put ourselves in a big hole in that first quarter. We talked at halftime about what it takes to win and had good energy early on in the third-quarter shifting momentum back to our sideline by playing together. Next week we are going to need to clean some things up and play with a little more discipline as we get into conference play." – Head Coach
