Twelve Hawks Recognized by Phil Steele on Postseason Teams

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Monmouth University football program had 12 student-athletes honored by Phil Steele on the publication's annual All-America and All-Coastal Athletic Association Teams for the 2024 season, it was announced Friday.

Derek Robertson led the way by being selected a Fourth Team All-America choice, while Tra Neal and Rodney Nelson garnered Second and Third Team Freshman All-America status, respectively. Robertson and Sone Ntoh secured First Team All-CAA awards, while JT Cornelius was a Second Team All-CAA pick. TJ Speight collected three separate All-CAA honors; at wide receiver (third team), all purpose (third team) and kick returner (fourth team). Josh Derry was also a third team wideout alongside Speight, with Nelson, Ryan Moran and Luke Schabel landing on the fourth team. Rounding out the honorees were Jack Neri, Isaiah Rogers and Sam Korpoi who collected Fifth Team All-CAA awards. 

Robertson, who now has multiple All-American awards to his name, led the FCS in total passing yards (3,937) and passing yards per game (328.1) in 2024. He set the Monmouth single-season records for both passing yards and passing touchdowns with 31, which ranked third in the FCS. The team captain finished the regular season with 283 completions on 435 attempts, a 65.1% completion rate, with 31 touchdowns and only six interceptions. 

Robertson was also the nation's leader in total offense per game (325.3). In addition, he had at least one touchdown pass in every game, including six games with three or more touchdowns. Robertson's record-breaking season included a career-high 536 passing yards in the win at No. 20/18 Stony Brook (11/23). He was also named CAA Offensive Player of the Week in consecutive weeks to end the season and the CAA Offensive Player of the Year.

Neal played in all 12 games and made six starts at wide receiver during his rookie campaign. He totaled 34 receptions for 490 yards and a team-high seven touchdowns on the season. Neal caught five balls for 55 yards and recorded his first touchdown against Lafayette on September 7. He had a career-high 94 yards receiving, including a career-best 51-yard TD reception, on three catches in the victory over No. 20/18 Stony Brook on November 23. Neal also threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Jack Neri in the win over the Seawolves. He was named the CAA Rookie of the Week on November 25.

Nelson appeared in all 12 games and made nine starts at running back. He was the team leader with 809 rushing yards on the season on 133 carries, good for 6.1 yards per attempt. Nelson totaled six rushing touchdowns and caught 17 passes for 154 yards on the year. He earned his first start and led Monmouth with 91 yards rushing, including a 24-yard run for his first-career touchdown at Maine on September 14. Nelson racked up a career-high 128 yards rushing, including a 34-yard touchdown run against Fordham on September 28. He led Monmouth with 83 yards on 10 carries, including a 26-yard touchdown run in the win over No. 8/9 Villanova on November 16. Nelson ran for 44 yards on eight carries with two touchdowns in the win at No. 20/18 Stony Brook on November 23.

Ntoh closed his career with an outstanding season as he set a new Monmouth single-season rushing touchdowns record with 25 and led the FCS in both rushing touchdowns and total touchdowns (26). The team captain scored at least one touchdown in every game and averaged 4.5 yards per carry, totaling 487 rushing yards. Ntoh earned CAA Offensive Player of the Week honors following a five touchdown outburst against Fordham and was a First Team All-CAA recipient after the season.

Cornelius earned Second Team All-CAA honors after starting every game, including nine at right tackle and three at left tackle. Cornelius played a key role in helping the Monmouth offense rank second in the nation in total offense (489.9 yards per game), scoring offense (39.0 points per game), and passing offense (332.5 yards per game). He helped pave the way for Robertson and Noth's record-breaking seasons that included the program's first victory over an FBS team when the Hawks knocked off FIU.

Speight had 61 receptions for 896 yards and six receiving touchdowns, while also totaling 346 yards on 16 kickoff returns, including one touchdown. He was a dynamic all-purpose threat, finishing with 112.2 all-purpose yards per game, which ranked fourth in the CAA. Speight had three 100-yard receiving games, including a career-high 151 yards against No. 20/18 Stony Brook (11/23), and scored three total touchdowns in the homecoming victory against Bryant.

Derry had 60 receptions for 917 yards and five touchdowns as a sophomore. Derry ranked eighth in the FCS in receiving yards per game (91.7) and averaged six receptions per game, which ranked second in the CAA. He had three 100-yard games, including a career day in the victory at Maine. Derry amassed 227 yards and two touchdowns, with a Monmouth record 94-yard TD catch against the Black Bears which earned him CAA Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Moran led the Hawks with 85 tackles, including 40 solo stops and 5.0 tackles for loss. Moran was a dominant force on the defensive side of the ball, adding two quarterback hurries and two pass breakups. He recorded a season-high 12 tackles in the win over New Hampshire and finished the year with a team-high 11 tackles in the win at No. 20/18 Stony Brook. Moran started every game and was a team captain, helping anchor Monmouth's defense throughout the 2024 season.

On 32 punts, Schabel accumulated 1,438 yards, averaging an outstanding 44.9 yards per punt as a sophomore. He forced 11 fair catches and pinned six punts inside the 20-yard line. Eight of Schabel's punts exceeded 50 yards, highlighted by a career-long 72-yard boot against Bryant.

Neri played a significant role for Monmouth's offense and totaled 32 receptions for 329 yards and five touchdowns, tying for third on the team in touchdowns. He had a season-best eight receptions for 50 yards and a touchdown in the win at Rhode Island. Neri was a reliable target throughout the season, including a career-long 40-yard touchdown reception on a trick play in the win at No. 20/18 Stony Brook.

Rogers started every game at defensive tackle and recorded 50 tackles, including 19 solo stops, 1.5 tackles for loss, four quarterback hurries, and two pass breakups. Rogers had a standout season, highlighted by a career-high 11 tackles opposite Delaware.

Korpoi started all 12 games at linebacker and finished second on the team with 73 tackles, including 43 solo stops, and contributed four tackles for loss, one sack, three pass breakups, and two quarterback hurries. Korpoi set a career high with 10 tackles in his first career start against Eastern Washington and equaled that mark later in the season against Towson.

After a record-breaking 2024 season, Monmouth fans can look forward to another exciting year as season tickets for 2025 will go on sale in January.
