WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Bill Britton has stepped down as the head coach of Monmouth University Men's Golf, effective immediately, the department announced Tuesday.
Â
"I want to thank Coach Britton for his service and commitment to Monmouth University and our men's golf program," said Acting Director of Athletics Jen Sansevero. "We wish him well as he enters his next chapter both personally and professionally."
Â
Britton took over the program in July 2019, and coached the Hawks for four seasons, ushering the team into the Colonial Athletic Association this past year. In his time at the helm, he coached three individual winners, including
Erik Stevens (2021 Rolling Green Intercollegiate), Ron Robinson (2021 Bucknell Invitational) and
Ethan Lee (2023 Hawk Invitational). Britton's first tournament win as a head coach came in the 2023 Hawk Invitational at Deal Golf and Country Club, which was led by Lee's 66.
Â
"It has been a pleasure and my privilege to have coached the last four years at Monmouth University," said Britton. "Coaching has been the most rewarding thing I have ever done, and I only wish I could have been more helpful to our players. I am grateful to the University and everyone I have worked with, particularly our student-athletes. I will miss coaching and being a part of the University community, but I know it is time for me to step down and spend more time with my family."
Â
Britton led MU to a pair of fifth-place finishes in the MAAC Championships and an eighth-place marker in this season's CAA Championships after his inaugural conference championships in 2020 were cancelled due to COVID. Three players were named All-MAAC under Britton's watch, including Brendan Smith in 2022 as well as Stevens and Robinson in 2021.
