WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – The Monmouth University football program has revealed its team captains for its 2022 season, head coach
Kevin Callahan announced at a team meeting on Tuesday.
Five Hawks, three on defense and two on offense, will lead the program this year.
Da'Quan Grimes,
Eddie Morales III,
Tony Muskett,
Justin Szuba and
Tyrese Wright will hold leadership roles as Monmouth embarks on its first season in the CAA.
"We are fortunate to have a lot of great leaders on this 2022 team," Callahan stated. "Our team did a great job selecting five outstanding people to lead us into this season. Each one of these guys is not only an accomplished player on the field, but they are also outstanding in the locker room."
Grimes, a graduate student from Gaithersburg, MD, returns for his final season after a preseason injury in 2021 sidelined him for the entire season. A two-time First Team All-Big South selection, he led the Hawks in tackles in 2019 and the Spring 2021 campaign. Grimes enters the season with 192 career tackles and 19 tackles for loss.
A Howell, NJ product, Morales III is a dual-threat defensive back and special teams standout who led the Big South last season in punt return yardage and was a First Team All-Big South honoree at both corner and punt returner. Morales III started all 11 games in the secondary and led the Hawks with three interceptions. He totaled 57 tackles, including 35 solo stops, with six pass breakups and nine passes defended.
Muskett, Monmouth's returning two-year starter at quarterback, finished the 2021 season with 2,651 passing yards and 25 touchdowns, which both ranked second all-time in a single season at MU. Muskett, a junior from Springfield, VA, earned First Team All-Big South honors for the second consecutive season after leading the conference's top scoring offense at 32 points per game.
Like Grimes, Szuba missed the entire 2021 campaign following a preseason injury. The graduate student from Brick, NJ served as a student assistant offensive line coach during his absence from the playing field and has played in 26 career games with 18 starts at right tackle. He was a 2021 First Team All-Big South selection in the spring and an All-America choice by Hero Sports following his 2019 season.
Wright has played in every game of his three-year career, including 20 starts in the secondary. He is coming off a 2021 Second Team All-Big South honor after leading the Hawks in tackles (71) and solo stops (49). Wright, a native of Bridgeport, CT, also led Monmouth with 10 passes defended from his safety position in 2021.
Monmouth's opening game as a member of the CAA is set for September 1 when the Hawks travel to Durham, NH to meet New Hampshire at 7 p.m.
