THE JET

Because I live in South Carolina, I don’t get to cover many Monmouth games. Only 2-3 per season, at the most, when they travel South. Pete Guerriero was one of the most exciting players to cover. Certain players look great when they break a tackle or sprint away from a defender, Pete was one of those players. He just looked great in almost every shot.

IN TIGHT

I love shooting football the most. It’s the most challenging both mentally and physically. You have a lot of gear and the game is changing constantly. A photographer has to pay attention to everything that is going on in a football game, down and distance, time left in the half or game. It really keeps you on your toes. My favorite shots in football are the close-up shot where the viewer can see the players face through the facemask.

In this image, against Charleston Southern in Charleston, SC, Shawn Clark is grimacing before he is about to be hit as he gets closer to the goal line. I just love the detail of this image.

HUDDLE UP

This was an exciting game for me. Monmouth was competing for the Big South football title and Kennesaw State has been a great team the past several years. Two years before Monmouth took a loss at Kennesaw and I think the Hawks were looking for a little revenge. Because I had been around for several years at this point, several players and coaches were used to me and allowed me to get in close to get great shots like this. It helps when it’s a beautiful sunny day in Georgia.

RIGHT PLACE, PERFECT TIME

More times than not, a decisive play in a game seems to be away from you or the angle is off or the referee is in the way or something. But sometimes the sun is at your back and the play is coming right at you. You just keep repeating to yourself, “please don’t screw this up!” Tymere Berry’s interception was a great play and it came right at me. Very decisive too and Monmouth pulled away after his pick six.
