Monmouth (2-4) 7
WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – An early deficit proved too much to overcome for the Monmouth University men's lacrosse team as it fell to visiting Mercer on Saturday afternoon at Kessler Stadium.
Mercer jumped out to an early 4-0 advantage midway through the first quarter and never trailed despite repeated comeback attempts by Monmouth. The Hawks closed the deficit to one goal late in the third quarter when
David Cormack scored on the man-up unit, before Mercer responded with the next three goals to put the game out of reach.
Mike McIntyre scored twice and
Max Brooks contributed three assists in the loss.
NOTES & QUOTES
"We got off to a slow start with some untimely mistakes defensively and then again later as we started to get going in the second half. When you miss opportunities you are going to lose to Division I teams. We are going to get back to work on Monday, work on fundamentals, skills, toughness and try to come together to put a good five days of practice together and be ready for Siena next week."
- Head Coach Brian Fisher
"It was the first time we have played Mercer, so we weren't too familiar with them. They are a big, athletic team who grinded for a full 60 minutes today. We came out slow, but it is promising we are making progress, but at the end of the day we were unable to get a win and that's what we are looking for. Non-conference play is challenging but it prepares us for conference play, which is what really matters. We are looking forward to Siena next week."
- Junior Captain Chris Hervada
- The game was the first meeting all-time between Monmouth and Mercer.
- The Hawks moved to 4-1 all-time against current Southern Conference opponents.
- The game was Monmouth's final non-conference game of the season.
- The Hawks wore their blue chrome helmets with white jerseys and shorts.
