BROOKLYN-Â Monmouth (4-2) junior
Allison Turturro's (Sound Beach, NY/Miller Place) goal with 6:56 left in the game turned out to be the difference as the Hawks edged LIU-Brooklyn (1-6) 14-13 on Saturday afternoon in New York.
Turturro took a feed from senior
Jenny Staines (Silver Spring, MD/Good Council) inside the eight-meter, spun to her left and shot to the left side of the net. It was Staines' three goals in the first half that helped keep the Hawks ahead of the Blackbirds at the break, 10-9.  While the two teams combined for 19 goals in the first half, the second half belonged to the defenses as each team scored just four times in the final 30 minutes of play.
Â
The two teams went back and forth throughout the first half with Monmouth taking a 10-8 lead before LIU's Rachel Masullo scored with 1:27 left to cut the halftime deficit to one. The teams traded goals over the first 18 minutes of the second half before Staines and
Caroline Bleck (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) tallied markers within 1:01 of each other to put MU ahead 13-11. The Blackbirds tied up the game with a pair of Bianca Santucci goals, the second of which came with 7:23 left in the half. Less than a minute later Staines found Turturro for what would be the eventual game-winner.

NOTES & QUOTES
"Of course, I'm happy for the team that we got the win but we need to hold ourselves and our teammates to a higher standard of performance and execution. We need to be dangerous on both ends of the field at the same time and be dominant in moments that we can control."Â
Monmouth Head Coach Jordan Trautman
