WOMEN'S LACROSSE OUTLASTS GWU, 11-10

WASHINGTON, DC – Monmouth University's women's lacrosse team earned its fifth win of the 2019 season with a 11-10 victory over Atlantic 10 Conference member George Washington (2-5) on Saturday afternoon in Washington, DC.

The Hawks were led by senior Jenny Staines (Silver Spring, MD/Good Council) who had four goals but it was junior Racehl Mills () who had her finest game yet with the Blue & White. Mills finished with three goals on five shots, five ground balls, two caused turnovers and a draw control. Tori Hampton had four goals for the Colonials, who had six other players with one goal apiece.

With 20:11 left in regulation Colonial Abbey Carlin tied the game up at 9-9 but Staines and Mills tallied a pair of goals over the next 10 minutes to put the Hawks back up 11-9. With 2:40 remaining GW's Caroline Keirnan got her squad to within one with her first goal of the afternoon. Monmouth's Allison Turturro (Sound Beach, NY/Miller Place) won the ensuing draw but the Colonials got the ball back when goalie Jenna Oler turned away her 10th Hawk shot of the afternoon with 1:44 remaining. George Washington would get one more opportunity after a late Monmouth turnover but the Colonials could not capitalize and the Hawks claimed their fifth victory of 2019.

The first half was truly a back and forth affair with neither team able to get more than a two-goal lead. The Hawks went up 8-6 on Allison Stofregen's (Ellicott City, MD/Notre Dame Prep) goal with 9:22 left but the Colonials closed to within one with 32 seconds remaining. Three Hawks had two goals in the first half including Staines and Nicole Ceraso (Massapequa, NY/Plainedge) as Monmouth took a one-goal lead into the break.

NOTES & QUOTES
"It was a tough and scrappy game and it's really fun to come out on top on a day like today. I'm proud of the defense's effort stepping up in the second half with some key stops. We have been working to finish out a 60 minute game and today we found a way to grind it out and get the W." Monmouth Head Coach Jordan Trautman
