ALBANY, NY – Austin Tilghman (Wilmington, DE/Archbishop Carroll) tied a career-high with 24 points, none bigger than the two foul shots he hit with two seconds left in the third overtime to lift Monmouth to a 93-89 victory over Siena on Sunday afternoon. MU got 15+ points from four players, including
Micah Seaborn (Fort Worth, TX/Prime Prep Academy), who returned from injury for the first time in seven games.
In the third overtime, Jordan Horn converted a runner with six seconds left to tie the game at 89. Tilghman caught the inbounds pass and was fouled in the backcourt with 3.1 seconds to go, making both before deflecting and stealing the ensuing insert pass. He made another two foul shots to lock up the road win for MU.
MU led by five late in the second overtime after a pair of foul shots from Seaborn, but Siena battled back with an and-one from Christian Bentley with 19 seconds left. Seaborn was then tied up in the backcourt, and the possession arrow gave the ball back to the home team. Ultimately, Horn hit two free throws with two seconds to go to extend the game to a third session.
The teams went back-and-forth in the second overtime period until Ahsante Shivers got to the rim and scored with 32 seconds to go, making it 74-72 Siena. MU got a look from deep from Seaborn that was off the mark, but
Ray Salnave (Elmont, NY/Benjamin N. Cardozo) corralled a loose ball out of a crowd in a chaotic sequence, eventually tying the game from the foul line with 6.1 seconds left to go to the second OT.
Neither team led by more than four throughout entire second half and the end of regulation came down to the wire after both teams went scoreless for over three minutes down the stretch. Tilghman put MU up two with a pair of free throws with a minute remaining, only to see Thomas Huerter Jr's jumper tie the game with 26 seconds to go. Each team missed its final look, sending the game to an extra session.
The Hawks jumped to a 9-0 lead on three triples in the first 1:50, prompting an early Siena timeout. Seaborn assisted on the first two before knocking in the third one in his return from a seven-game absence. MU held the lead for the majority of the first half before Khalil Richard's three tied the game at 25. MU ended the period five of the last eight points following a 31-all tie to take a two-point lead into the locker room.
NOTES AND QUOTES
"We were fortunate to get just enough stops and Austin [Tilghman] made his free throws down the stretch to be able to get out of here with a victory." –
King Rice
"We got some older guys that have been through some things before. I thought Diago played better down the stretch than he did earlier in the game. Austin was awesome, anytime you can get a win in three overtimes your kids had to fight." –
King RiceÂ
"I was just trying to tell these guys to get one stop at a time and we'll be fine offensively. Just one stop at a time and it was hard because we were beating ourselves the first two overtimes but we cleaned things up and went to zone and that was good for us." –
