BUFFALO, NY – Monmouth led at the half and got a career-best 22 points from
Austin Tilghman (Wilmington, DE/Archbishop Carroll) but fell at Canisius Sunday afternoon, 94-79. Canisius used a 16-3 run in the early stages of the second half to take the lead for good, snapping a three-game MU winning streak in the series.
Trailing by four early in the second half, the home team went on a 16-3 push capped by Jermaine Crumpton's three to lead by nine, 59-50. The lead remained between nine and 11 for the bulk of the period, with the Hawks briefly cutting it to seven at 10:17. After
Diago Quinn (New York, NY/Lake Forest Academy) laid one in to make it an eight-point deficit, Canisius went on an 11-0 run to lead by their largest margin of 19, capped by a corner three from Jonathan Sanks. MU trimmed it back to nine at 3:08 but would come no closer.
Monmouth jumped to an early lead on Canisius, going up 22-11 after
Louie Pillari (Tinton Falls, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) converted a three-point play and hit a three with
George Papas (Jersey City, NJ/Union Catholic) nailing a triple in between. The lead grew to as many as 13 when Tilghman found a wide-open lane to lay one in, making it 27-14 at 9:36. Canisius battled back thanks to a 12-3 run after Monmouth led by 11 to trim the lead down to two, the halftime margin.
NOTES AND QUOTES
"Give a lot of credit to Coach Witherspoon and Canisius. We were not a very disciplined basketball team and I think that changed the game. We were disciplined for about 17 minutes, but at this time we can't sustain our discipline for 40 minutes and it keeps killing us." –
