THE COACHING MATCHUP:
Kevin Callahan begins his 25th season at Monmouth as the Hawks' head coach. Callahan owns a 137-116 career coaching record, all with Monmouth. Coming into the season, Callahan's 137 victories ranks him 13th among active coaches in the Football Championship Subdivision. The only coach in Monmouth history, he has led the Blue & White to five conference championships, in 1996, 1998, 2003, 2004 and 2006. Callahan has earned conference coach of the year accolades in 1998, 2003 and 2006. Prior to arriving in West Long Branch, Callahan served as defensive coordinator at Colgate for eight seasons and at Wagner for three years. He began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Albany (1977-79) and Syracuse (1980) before becoming a Seahawk assistant in 1981.
Â
Connell Maynor, entering his 4th year at the helm of the Pirates, owns a 16-21 record at Hampton. Maynor has a 13-12 record in his first 25 conference games and has guided one of the most potent offenses in the MEAC. Maynor comes to Hampton from Winston Salem State where he guided them to a 45-6 overall record and the 2012 Division II National Championship game. In addition to an extensive college coaching career, he served as the offensive coordinator with the Philadelphia Soul for three years. He was a 12 year veteran of the AFL winning a pair of World Championships with the Tampa Bay Storm and the Orlando Predators. Hayes was a First Team All-MEAC quarterback at North Carolina A&T, leading the Aggies to the 1991 MEAC Championship. He was inducted to the NC A&T Hall of Fame in 2014.
