PRINCETON, NJ – Monmouth sliced the Princeton lead to as little as one in the second half, but the Tigers pulled away late to take a 69-58 win at Jadwin Gym Tuesday. MU was led by freshman
Deion Hammond (Mitchellville, MD/Riverdale Baptist) with 17 points and five threes.
Princeton led by as many as 13 in the early stages of the second half, but sparked by
Marcus McClary (Linden, NJ/The Patrick School), the Hawks came back. A 10-0 run got the Hawks within three after Hammond and
Austin Tilghman (Wilmington, DE/Archbishop Carroll) knocked in back-to-back triples at 10:06. MU then got within one at 52-51 following a pair of McClary foul shots at 5:16, and again pulled it to 57-56 at 3:17 when Hammond sliced baseline to the rim. However, Devin Cannady scored eight points in the final 1:40, including two three pointers, to secure the Princeton win.
The Hawks opened the game on a 16-3 run to jump to the early lead, highlighted by triples from Seaborn and Hammond. Princeton responded with a 15-2 run of their own, with four different players hitting triples to come back and get even at 18 at the 7:50 mark of the opening period. Princeton extended that run to 25-4 to take a 28-20 lead at the 2:48 mark, but Monmouth used a 6-0 run of their own to trim it back to two. Ultimately, Devin Cannady's layup at the buzzer made it 31-26 Princeton at the break.
