A LOOK AT TODAY'S GAME
  • Monmouth is looking to win its seventh straight game today and go 4-0 in Big South play for the first time since joining the league in 2014.
  • For the first time in school history, Monmouth is ranked nationally after earning a #24 spot in the latest FCS Coaches Polls. For the eighth conseuctive week, Monmouth is receiving votes in the STATS FCS Poll
  • The Hawks are 8-1 for the first time since 2006 and haven't won seven straight since the 2004 season.
  • Gardner-Webb brings 1-8 record into today's game, falling last weekend in the final seconds to Charleston Southern
  • Monmouth won he first two games in the series but the Runnin' Bulldogs edged the Hawks by one in overtime last season in NC

THE COACHING MATCHUP
Kevin Callahan is in his 25th season at Monmouth as the Hawks' head coach. Callahan owns a 143-116 career coaching record, all with Monmouth. Coming into the season, Callahan's 135 victories ranked him 11th among active coaches in the Football Championship Subdivision. The only coach in Monmouth history, he has led the Blue & White to five conference championships, in 1996, 1998, 2003, 2004 and 2006. Callahan has earned conference coach of the year accolades in 1998, 2003 and 2006. Prior to arriving in West Long Branch, Callahan served as defensive coordinator at Colgate for eight seasons and at Wagner for three years. He began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Albany (1977-79) and Syracuse (1980) before becoming a Seahawk assistant in 1981.
 
Carroll McCray is in his fifth year as the head football coach at Gardner-Webb, owning an overall record of 21-34. In his first season directed GWU to a 7-5 record, its highest win total since 2003, including a 3-1 record against nationally-ranked teams. GWU spent two weeks in the national top-25 in 2013 and had five players named First Team All-Big South. Throughout his 30 year coaching career, McCray has had previous stops as associate head coach at Mercer and as head coach at Austin Peay. As an assistant, McCray has an outstanding track record with stops at Furman, Mississippi State, Samford, South Carolina and Appalachian State. The Monroe, N.C., native was a three-year letterwinner on the offensive line at Gardner-Webb, graduating in 1983.

MONMOUTH MOVES UP IN NATIONAL RANKING
-One week after cracking the top-25 for the first time in school history, Monmouth moved up two spots to #22 in the FCS Coaches Poll after Saturday's blowout win over Presbyterian
-The Hawks have earned votes numerous times over the past 11 seasons, including eight straight weeks in the STATS FCS poll this season.
 
GUERRIERO EARNS FOURTH WEEKLY CONFERENCE HONOR
Monmouth University freshman running back Pete Guerriero was named Big South Freshman of the Week, league officials announced Monday.
The 5-10 running back was also an honorable mention for STATS National Freshman Player of the Week. Guerriero led all offensive players with 172 all-purpose yards, including 153 yards rushing in Monmouth's 42-21 win over Presbyterian on Saturday. The freshman turned in his fourth 100+ yard rushing performance in eight games and now leads the Big South in rushing yards (768) and all-purpose yards (132.4 yards per game). Guerriero also scored his eighth rushing touchdown of the year as the Hawks tallied 30+ points for the seventh time this season.
 
MONMOUTH AGAINST THE BIG SOUTH
-Since starting up Big South league play in 2014, Monmouth owns an 7-12 conference record.
-The Hawks own a 2-1 record against Gardner-Webb, 2-2 against PC, are 2-3 against Liberty, 1-3 vs CSU and and 0-2 vs Kennesaw State.
-Monmouth followed up a 1-4 first season in the Big South by going 3-3 in 2015. Last year MU was 0-5 in the Big South. MU is currently 3-0 in 2017.
-MU was 0-3 against members of the Big South prior to joining the league, including dropping a home and home series with Coastal Carolina and a non-conference tilt with the Flames.
-With the win over Presbyterian, Monmouth is 3-0 in Big South play for the first time in program history.
 
DID YOU KNOW?
Monmouth junior RB Devell Jones is second in the Big South with 10 rushing touchdowns. Jones, who is just the eighth Big South player to score a rushing TD in the first five games of a season, is the first Monmouth player to score 10 rushing touchdowns since MU joined the Big South in 2014.
