WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – In a game that featured seven ties and eight lead changes, Marist College scored with 2:36 left in regulation to defeat the Monmouth University men's lacrosse team, 9-8, in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener for both teams. The Hawks (4-3, 0-1 MAAC) had six different players score a goal, including two from both Dylan Schulte (Southampton, NJ/Seneca/Bridgeton Academy) and Eamon Campbell (Massapequa, NY/St. Anthony's).
Coming out of a timeout with 1:18 left in regulation, Schulte and Chris Daly (Wynnewood, PA/Lower Merion) both registered shots on goal for MU, but the attempts were turned away by Marist's goalkeeper Brian Corrigan to secure the one-goal victory.
Marist (2-4, 1-0 MAAC) jumped ahead by two within the first 6:06 of the game on back-to-back goals from Joseph Radin. The Hawks got on the board with 4:26 to go in the opening quarter as sophomore Bryce Wasserman (Southlake, TX/Grapevine Faith) set up junior Eric Berger (Ardsley, PA/Penn Charter) for his fourth goal of the year. Less than two minutes later, Campbell connected with Dan Bloodgood (Jackson, NJ/Freehold Township) for a man-up goal to even the score at 2-2. The Red Foxes answered 42 second later to take a one goal lead into the second quarter.
MU knotted the score 20 seconds into the second stanza on Zack Schleicher's (Wayne, PA/Conestoga) marker off a feed from Hunter Jones (Abington, PA/Abington Senior). Schulte netted his first of the afternoon, an unassisted tally, nearly three minute later to give the Blue and White its first lead of the day. The two teams exchanged goals over a two minute span, including Schulte's second, to send Monmouth into the break ahead by one, 5-4.
Back-to-back man-up goals from Marist to start the second half gave the Red Foxes a 6-5 lead before Campbell's maker with 6:54 left tied the score at 6-6. Steve Murawski (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) picked up a ground ball in the defensive end and sprung Gordon Phillips (Port Coquittam, BC/Trinity Pawling [NY]) for a fast break goal with 2:33 left gave the Blue and White a 7-6 lead to end the quarter.
Marist began the final 15-minutes with two straight goals to jump ahead 8-7. With two Red Foxes sent off for penalties, Campbell fired home a man-up goal with 7:23 left to knot the score at 8-8. JD Recor registered the game-winner off a pass from Radin to give Marist the victory.
Campbell, who has scored in four-straight games, finished with a team-high three points for the Blue and White with two goals and an assist. Schulte and Berger both finished with a pair of points.
Junior goalkeeper Nick Hreshko (Warrington, PA/La Salle College H.S.) made seven saves in defeat, while his counterpart, Corrigan, turned away 13 MU shots in the victory.
For the game, the Hawks outshot the Red Foxes 41-26 and won 16 of 19 faceoffs, led by Keegan Teluk (Fallston, MD/Fallston) who won 15 of 18 faceoffs he attempted.
Monmouth returns to action on Saturday, March 26th, when it travels to Riverdale, NY for a MAAC battle with Manhattan beginning at 4:30 p.m.
