MONMOUTH FALLS TO PRESBYTERIAN, 17-13

CLINTON, SC- Monmouth University dropped to 4-3 on the season and 0-2 in Big South play with a 17-13 loss at Presbyterian (2-4, 1-1 Big South) on Thursday night.

Down by four with just over two minutes remaining, Lavon Chaney (Edgewater, MD/South River) tore off a 34 yard run down to the PC 13. Monmouth was unable to get a first down, setting up a fourth and nine from the PC 12. Redshirt sophomore Kenji Bahar (Baltimore, MD/Calvert Hall) threaded one into Reggie White Jr. (Randallstown, MD/Milford Mill) but Kenneth Coleman broke up the pass to preserve the win.

Chaney scored his fourth touchdown of the season on Monmouth's 80 yard drive late in the second quarter to put the Hawks ahead 7-0 at halftime. Cheek and company answered on their next possession, driving 86 yards on 13 plays with DaShawn Davis getting behind the defense for a touchdown.

Aided by a pair of Monmouth 15 yard penalties, PC took the opening drive of the second half 67 yards. The Blue Hose got to inside the five but had to settle for a 27 yard Brett Norton field goal to take the 10-7 lead with 8:43 left in the third quarter. Chaney piled in after covering 48 of 61 total yards on the next MU drive and the Hawks led 13-10 with 35 seconds left in the third quarter. Backup quarterback John Walker hit Daryl Wilson for a 44 yard touchdown with 12:45 left in the fourth quarter for the go-ahead touchdown. Monmouth would get the ball just two more times in the game.

Notes and Quotes

"This was a game where we knew we needed to execute in all three phases of the game and quite honestly we didn't do that in order to win. Too many times we hurt ourselves with penalties that put us in some tough spots. We gave up some big plays on defense and were not able to generate anything consistently on offense." – Head Coach Kevin Callahan
