HAWKS FALL TO TOP-SEED MARIST 11-6 IN MAAC SEMIFINALS

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Monmouth, in just its second season of men's lacrosse, fell to top-seeded Marist 11-6 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference semifinals on Thursday night at Tenney Stadium. The Hawks, who finish their season with a 6-8 overall record, received a career-high four points from redshirt junior John Castellano (Eastchester, N.Y./Iona Prep), while senior goalkeeper Garrett Conaway (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty) made 10 saves for the Blue & White.

Monmouth, which trailed 9-2 with 7:24 left in the third, registered four straight goals to climb within a 9-6 deficit with 13:07 remaining in the fourth stanza. Sophomore Tyler Keen (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) started the streak for the Hawks and assisted on senior Ryan Schwartz's (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) tally with 3:14 on the clock in the third.

Castellano fed sophomore Chris Daly (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) for a score to close out the third, notched his third goal of the game to open the fourth and pull the Hawks within three. Castellano, who got the start in place of the injured All-Rookie selection, and team leading scorer Bryce Wasserman (Southlake, Texas/Grapevine Faith), has tallied six points in the last two games for MU.

Trailing 2-0 early, Castellano got Monmouth on the board at 7:50 of the first period, off a feed from Eric Berger (Ardsley, Pa./Penn Charter), before the Red Foxes went on a 4-0 run to lead 6-1 with 9:24 left in the second. Castellano's second score of the game made it 6-2 with 5:20 remaining in the half.

Marist (12-3), which has won seven straight, outshot Monmouth 40-29, as Conaway made double-digit saves for the 10th time this season for the Hawks. Monmouth was 1-for-6 in extra man opportunities, while the Red Foxes won 12 of 19 face offs.

Monmouth, with a roster of 37 underclassmen, qualified for the MAAC postseason in just its second season, while seniors Conaway, Schwartz, Ryan Horsch (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) and Zach Johannes (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) completed their careers for the Hawks.
