MEN'S LACROSSE FALLS 9-8 AT DETROIT

DETROIT, MICH. - Monmouth, which led 8-4 entering the final period, surrendered five fourth-quarter goals, en route to a 9-8 defeat at Detroit in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Titan Stadium. The Hawks fall to 5-6 overall and 2-2 in the MAAC with the road defeat.

Senior Zach Johannes (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) and sophomore Tyler Keen (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) each scored a pair of goals for the Hawks, while freshman Bryce Wasserman (Southlake, Texas/Grapevine Faith) added three points on a goal and two assists.

Monmouth outshot the Titans 43-37, while senior Garrett Conaway (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty) made 15 saves for the Hawks, his eighth match this season with double-digit stops for the Blue & White.

After falling behind 1-0 at 11:08 of the first, the Hawks rattled off three straight scores in the final 4:58 of the opening stanza to claim a 3-1 lead, as sophomore Chris Daly (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) scored off a feed from Wasserman to knot the game at 1-1, and Wasserman and sophomore Dylan Schulte (Southampton, N.J./Seneca/Bridgeton Academy) tallied unassisted goals for the Hawks.

Monmouth increased its lead to 4-1 at 13:52 of the second when Keen scored the first of his two unassisted markers, while Johannes' first, with 2:31 showing, gave the Hawks a 5-2 lead at the half.

Consecutive unassisted goals from sophomore Eric Berger (Ardsley, Pa./Penn Charter) and Johannes to open the third quarter, pushed MU in front 7-2, while Keen's second handed the Hawks an 8-4 advantage through three periods.

Detroit, which got goals from five different players in the final quarter, tied the game at 8-8 on Scott Drummond's unassisted tally with 4:55 left and claimed a 9-8 lead with 2:18 showing on a Mark Anstead score.

This was Monmouth's fourth game decided by two goals or less and the sixth time this season a Hawks' outcome was decided by three goals or fewer.

Monmouth returns to action on Saturday, April 18, when the Hawks travel to Quinnipiac University for a 12:00 p.m. MAAC contest in Hamden, Conn.
