DEAL, N.J. – Playing in cold and windy conditions at the par-71 Deal Country Club, senior Corey Carrick (Howell, N.J./Howell) fired a 75 to lead the Monmouth University men's golf team to a second place result at the Monmouth Invitational, which featured five Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) squads.
Saint Peter's earned the team crown with its 313, paced by medalist Brian Grubbs who notched a 74 to lead the field. MU earned second, finishing a shot behind the Peacocks, and four strokes in front of Manhattan which claimed third. Fairfield and Iona each finished with a 321 to share fourth.
Carrick notched a 35 in the front nine before adding five strokes in the back nine to finish with a 75 to earn his second top-10 result of the season. Junior Brady Goodling (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) earned a share of third, finishing a stroke behind Carrick, while sophomore Cody Gross (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) duplicated his 40 on both the front and back nine to end the day with an 80. Second-year Hawk Kyle Deisher (Montgomery, Pa./Montgomery Area) and junior Colin Buckley both completed the 18-holes with an 83.
“In order for us to be competitive, we need a full team effort and cannot afford to count scores in the 80s” commented head man Dennis Shea. “We will take a few days off and get back to work on Monday before heading to Saint Peter's event on Tuesday as we continue to prepare ourselves for the MAAC Championships in Florida.”
Playing as individuals, freshman Tommy Whelan (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) posted his season-best round of 76 to earn his first career top-10 result with a third place finish, while classmate Jesse Hazam (Mechanicsburg Pa./Mechanicsburg) carded an 80.
The Blue and White will travel to Neshanic Station, N.J. on Tuesday, April 22nd for the Peacocks Invitational for its final tune-up before the MAAC Championships, which will be held April 25-27 in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
